After my brain injury, I noticed that my interest in movies changed. I no longer could tolerate watching any kind of movie with fast action, bright lights, too many characters or complicated plots. When going to the theatre to see a movie, I’d go when there were fewer people in attendance, would show up after the previews, and would watch the movie with my sunglasses and noise reduction ear muffs. These accommodations plus the problems of not understanding the movie and/or missing or not remembering parts of the movie when I only see it once make it difficult to enjoy going to see a movie at the theatre.

Now I usually wait for the DVD to come out and watch the movie in the comfort of my own home. I can turn down the volume during the parts where it suddenly gets too noisy. And I can watch the movie multiple times until I remember and understand everything that is going on. Sometimes it feels like I’m watching a different movie because I miss so many things the first few times.

I am listing some of my favorite movies that I like because watching it is healing in some way. It might be because of a particular message. Or because a character was a source of inspiration to me. Sometimes it is because it does such a good job of bringing certain difficulties to light that may be difficult for others to understand.

What are some of your favorite movies that you find to be inspirational or healing? Why?
