Pets
I consider myself fortunate in having known many animals in my lifetime. They have pulled me through some very difficult times during my life. Schanita, a long-haired Chihuahua, who listened to me without judgment and helped me through a lonely adolescence when I felt misunderstood and rejected by my family. Tia, a Morab mare (part Morgan, part Arabian), who taught me calmness and respect are necessary ingredients for working with explosive powerhouses. In return for this treatment, she showed me what it was like to move powerfully and swiftly. What freedom felt like. She helped me temporarily escape from people who wanted to control and repress my spirit.
My current animal friends who have been my friends and saviors during my life with brain injury include two cats, two dogs and two birds. While some professionals have argued that they are too much work or too much noise and confusion for me, I maintain that their therapeutic values far outweigh any negatives.
